Photo Ethics Assignment

Summary:
A. Professional journalists often risk their lives to get honest images. On the other hand, photographers who violated rules and alter their pictures often have life lasting criticism. The National Press Photographers Association released a new and improved code of ethics in 2004, honest and accurate presentation of visual information is expected from all forms of visual media. Altering pictures is nothing new, while photography as an art form has been popular since 1860, there have been many opportunities to alter photos. When digital manipulation entered the market, airbrush and manipulations often make the sales, while hard facts and new magazines may not have been as popular, yet they show the truth. In the future, this problem could worsen and photographers who risk their lives to show the truth could get in trouble.

B. This type of photo editing is unethical and unacceptable because of the hard work other photographers put in to take honest pictures. While some photographers risk their lives to take photos that show the cold hard truth, it's unfair that other photographers don't put in nearly as much work but are winning the awards. This is not only unethical because people are lying, but it's also unfair to other photographers who are working hard to make a living.

Part 2:

This photo manipulation was the most unethical because of the way they darkened OJ Simpsons face. It makes him look creepy and just overall scary, which goes against morals and is racist. This photo was very edited and altered, and is a false representation.

This photo manipulation was the most ethical. The difference to me was very hard to notice. The only thing I saw different between the photos was that one was a little darker than the other. It gives a sort of omniscient vibe, but really the effect is the same in both the pictures. Speaking from my personal moral compass, this photo is not totally unethical.

Photo Challenge 6 Part 2

This first photo I took in the Mac theater. The windows were creating stripes across the floor of light. I took this opportunity and snapped a picture Karel. The lighting creates some cool contrast with the background, and I put the photo in black in white to really create more depth and darkness. The vibe given off by Karel is a little mysterious, which goes perfectly with the black and white choice.

This next photo I took of Karel also. I wanted to make it a little more natural and less posed than the last one. Karel is sat here picking flowers, which show the more nature oriented side of her personality. The lighting style is side lighting, which highlights her hair and skin, but leaves her face a little darker . I liked this photo because the flowers add some nice color and the lighting adds
more interest.

This last photo was also of Karel T. I took it in front of a mural to add some color and make the photo pop. The lighting is more subtle and doesn't come from a super specific angle, but overall tints the photo. I liked this because Karel looks calm and cool, and each photo shows a different side of her, which is what I was striding for.

Portrait Photo Challenge Part 1

This picture was taken by Annie Leibovitz. I chose this as one of my three favorite pictures because I feel like it really captures Adele's essence. Her surroundings include a notebook, headphones, and another notebook that she could be writing songs in. The lighting is coming from the side slightly and her pose gives her a sort of stressed out vibe that shows her deep in thought. The photo looks natural, which makes it look less posed and that adds to the overall depth of the photo.

Dorthea Lange took this second photo. This photo is more posed, but I like the effect the black and white adds. Not only is this a cute little kid, but also the color is very flat and gloomy, which helps prove Dorthea's overall point of taking photos during the Great Depression. The black and white helps add the hint towards a depressing time. There is a very soft glow of light slightly illuminating the young boys face, which helps add some highlight in the photo.

This is the last photo I chose taken by Eve Arnold. This is the favorite of all the three photos were a few different reasons. The young girl pictured is looking away from the camera and I like the dark vibes that it gives off. The background is out of focus which helps add a more direct point to show only the girl and her drink. The photo makes this girl seem lonely and sad, and it's nice that the photographer got the point across so easily. The lighting is coming from the side, which makes one side of the girls face very dark, which made her look even more alone.

Publication 2: Boys Basketball Game

Net or Nothing
On Friday night number 4 Griffin Garbut plays hard defense on the Crockett Junior Varsity team. All three teams played hard as it was their last home game of the season. JV crushed the Crocket Cougars 73-54. Garbut adds "It was nice to win the last home game, especially because we had so many people come out and support us." The team will finish out the season this week, and later in March will go to playoffs depending on the outcome of their next few games.

Jumping to the Heavens
The Junior Varsity McCallum Knights boys basketball team watch in shock as one of the Crocket opponents jumps and goes for the layup during the first half of their game Friday night. The boys played their last game with heart and got the W, beating Crocket 73-54. Asa Brown comments "It's sometimes scary to guard a layup, but its worth it because it feels so good to win in the end."  The night was not only special because it was their last home game, but also because it was seniors appreciation night. Parents of senior players got recognized for their hard work.

An Ode to the Seniors
At their last home game of the season, the senior varsity boys basketball players honor their parents and recognize them for the hard work they have put in over the past four years. The Knights senior night is also special because during halftime, the school drill team Blue Brigade performs. Senior player James Sullivan adds "It's been a crazy four years playing at McCallum and being able to thank my parents for all the time they have spent up at the gym was very special." Although the team lost, it was still nice to pay tribute to their parents before they go off to college

The power of the portrait photographer

The six photographers were led to believe that the man, Michael, was a different person and had a different occupation for each photographer. They were led to believe this because because the man leading this video wanted to see the difference in the photos for each different occupation of the man. The deception led all the photographs to be different, different lighting, props, and stance of the man being photographed. This video makes a point of the importance of the persons background, story, or job to influence the photograph setup. I agree with this point, the video is the important to teach us the lesson of the need for a story before you take the picture. Showing emotion in a photo is important, and it was a good video to watch before going out and taking our photos.

Revisiting lighting and composition (read and respond)

This photo rightfully won this award. The photo was in black and white which really brought out the contracts of the sky against the plane. The leading lines captured add depth to the photo, and make it more detailed. The photo also has parallelism and backlighting with makes the plane a silhouette. I agree with the award he won because of all the compositions of photography used in this photo.
